About Us.........What is Rotary?

Rotary is over a century young. It's an organization comprised of caring, local business persons and citizens, from various backgrounds, who share a common goal: to make the world a better place.
All over the world, every single day, tens of thousands of Rotarians are helping groups of people who are in need of our assistance. We are a civic organization dedicated to giving back to the community.
The collective leadership and expertise of our 1.2 million members help us tackle some of the biggest global challenges and the most pressing local needs. We are united by common values and a vision for the future, as we sharpen our focus on targeted, specific causes that will reach communities most in need.

Eradicating Polio

One example of how Rotary is changing the world is our commitment to eradicate Polio. Since 1979, through the establishment of a Rotary Action Group Rotarians have helped reduce Polio globally by 99%. In Jan 2012, after meeting Bill Gates' challenge to raise over 200 million dollars, Rotary International was the recipient of the largest grant ever given by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; 350 million dollars. To date, Rotarians have helped inoculated over 2 billion children in 122 countries, and although we are 'this close' to ending this dreaded disease we are not done. There are still three countries whose children are being stricken by this cruel crippling disease. We are 'this close' to eradicating Polio from the face of the earth forever, 'this close.'

All we need is YOU.

Curing Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's and Dementia afflicts more than 35 Million people globally, and that number will more than double by 2030, and again by 2050, to over 165,000 Million cases. If not stopped its global impact will be devastating. In the United States alone the burden it will place on Medicaid and Medicare could possibly bankrupt the system.

So how do we stop it?

We do two things: we raise global awareness and look for a cure. And that's exactly what the founders of the Cure Alzheimer's Fund, Located on Martha's Vineyard, are doing. With the help of the local Rotary Club of Martha's Vineyard the founders of the Cure Alzheimer's Fund has been able to impress upon Rotary International Leadership how important it is to stop this disease.

To that end, Rotary International has formed their newest Rotary Action Group, the Alzheimer's and Dementia Action Group. This group has a real challenge ahead, they must help: raise awareness, find a cure, and then help immunize the world. But to be successful, as with eradicating Polio, all we need is you. Watch this video to see how one small Rotary Club of Martha's Vineyard is changing the world.
